Simultaneous, consecutive or whispered interpretation
When performing a simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter works inside a booth, receives the discourse through a cable sound equipment and listens in his earphones. In this isolated environment he reproduces the discourse in a different language using a microphone, broadcasting it through radio waves so it can be received by the listening audience through receptors with earphones.
When performing a consecutive interpretation, the interpreter sits beside the speaker and after each phrase or paragraph, he interprets it into another language, while both take turns to speak. Depending on how long the sentences are and/or the complexity level of the speech, the interpreter might need to take notes during the execution of his work.
Whispered interpretation is an interpretation category where the interpreter sits beside one or more participants and whispers the interpretation of the speech to them. This method is preferred when only one or two people need to listen to the translated discourse, which excludes the need for simultaneous interpretation equipment and, consequently, reduces the cost involved.
